“Are You Registered to Vote?”

RSVP for an event near you

Remember how much fun we all had in 2008 registering voters across the nation, in our neighborhoods and at our schools? Yes? Good. We can relive it here, and now. During the weekend of July 17th, volunteers across the country will be registering people to vote as part of Organizing for America’s July 17th Day of Action. We’ll  be gathering on street corners, at coffee shops, and in playgrounds and parks, asking people who walk by a simple question: “Are you registered to vote in the fall?”

This question had profound implications in 2008 and can make the difference this November’s elections. And we need you to make sure it gets asked.

Can you host an event? Organizing for America will provide materials to help you have a successful event. You’ll need to find a high-traffic area in your community for the voter drive.

We’ve accomplished a lot in just the last 17 months, but there’s still much left to do. In 2008, voter registration and turnout was key to our victory, with more than 15 million new voters entering the political process. Now, in 2010, voter registration will be key to ensuring that President Obama has as many congressional allies as possible next year.

And, for everyone at Organizing for America and the MDP Youth Caucus, that means making the July 17th Day of Action as big as possible.

Can you host a Voter Registration event?

Give The Gift of Truth This Holiday Season

With a nod of the head to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, we wanted to pass along a very handy crib sheet of responses they’ve provided for the the Republican lies and distortions that may have accidentally been perceived as the truth by your Parents, Grandparents, Aunts or Uncles.

OPERATION INFORMATION: Voting Rights in Michigan

Third in our series of issues we’re highlighting is Voting Rights in the State of Michigan. Over the last decade, the Michigan Republican Party has made clear efforts legislatively and legally to attempt to suppress the rights of voters in Michigan. Instead of increasing ballot access to make sure every citizen interested in voting is able to, conservatives have striven to lock out as many as people as possible from voting booths across the state.

The following should serve as an easy way for you and friends to learn more about the issue and let others know.

Our future is too important to watch debate on it from the sidelines.

LAST CHANCE to Help Restore The Michigan Promise

Courtesy of the MSU College Dems and on behalf every single student in Michigan who has used this scholarship to help cover the enormous burden of Higher Education costs, Please take five minutes and tell these Representatives to support their Promise to Michigan’s Future by voting for HB 5403 today:

Here is a script you can easily follow:

“Hello, my name is ___________________ and I am calling to urge Representative _____________ to vote Yes on HB 5403. This bill is essential to Michigan’s future since it will completely restore funding for the Michigan Promise Scholarship. It will also protect Michigan’s other priorities, including educating our children through K – 12 education, keeping police officers and firefighters on the job, and diversifying our economy. Please tell Representative _____________ to vote Yes on HB 5403.”

On Tuesday, the Michigan House of Representatives will be voting on House Supplemental Funding Bill (HB 5403). Although the Promise Scholarship was eliminated last week during budget negotiations, this bill would completely restore the Michigan Promise Scholarship for the 96,000 students who currently receive it. If passed, this bill will also protect Michigan’s other priorities, including educating our children through K – 12 education, keeping police officers and firefighters on the job, and diversifying our economy.

HB 5403 will decide whether or not the Michigan Promise Scholarship will continue in the State of Michigan. As students, we need to be in support of this bill, which fights for Michigan’s priorities, including the Michigan Promise Scholarship.

We need to focus on the following five Representatives in the House to make sure that they vote for HB 5403. Michigan’s future depends on a budget that will help us diversify our economy to create jobs we need, that keep police officers and firefighters on the streets of our communities, and that help our kids get the education they need.
