Create The Blueprint for Michigan’s Future

On June 12th in East Lansing, Michigan our colleagues at Progress Michigan Education have organized what is shaping up to be a vibrant summit – The Michigan Summit: Blueprint for Change with a singular goal: getting together those of us interested in breaking down the barriers of political gridlock, those with visionary ideas – those of us interested in charting a clear and vibrant course for Michigan’s future.

Former White House advisor and Center for American Progress Fellow Van Jones will be the keynote speaker.

We’re going to be represented there, but we wanted to you to join us!

More information on the summit is located at www.themichigansummit.org, and early bird registration (including lunch) of only $40 (and $20 for students), closes on the 15th. (more…)

Congratulations are deserved!

On behalf of the entire leadership of the Michigan Democratic Party’s Youth Caucus we wanted to take a second to congratulate the students, educators, administrators, and support staff of Kalamazoo Central High School in Kalamazoo, MI as the winner of the White House’s 2010 Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge.

Watch this video from Education Secretary Arne Duncan announcing the winner of the competition:

Read This Speech: President Obama Speaks to Michigan Graduates

In his speech to over 85,000 today at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor (one of the largest crowds he has addressed since the Inauguration in January of 2009), President Barack Obama encouraged those graduating and those in attendance to commit their time in service of their nation and their communities, consider opposing viewpoints by listening to others rather than taking information from one source, and not be turned off by the grating tone of political discussion in America right now, saying: “Before we get too depressed about the current state of our politics, let’s remember our history. The great debates of the past all stirred great passions. They all made somebody angry, and at least once led to a terrible war. What is amazing is that despite all the conflict, despite all its flaws and its frustrations, our experiment in democracy has worked better than any form of government on Earth.”

It is this steadfast commitment to our democracy, and furthermore, to making our world a better place that emboldens us as young progressives to go out there and use our abilities to help our cities, our state and our nation be all that it can – and we urge every member of our Caucus and the citizens of America at large to take time to read this speech and take it passionately to heart.

Below is the text of President Barack Obama’s speech at the University of Michigan Commencement, released this afternoon by the White House:

Congrats!

Congratulations to the the next Secretary of State of the state of Michigan, Jocelyn Benson and the next Attorney General of the state of Michigan, David Leyton on their nominations today at the Michigan Democratic Party’s Nominating Convention.

Please visit their websites and volunteer so that we can undo the attacks Cox and Land have mounted against the young voters within this state.
